Hello, my name is Jayden Rose Whiting. I live and have grown up on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. I’m an 8th grader who attends Spring Creek School. My goals are to become an Actress and become a Science teacher.
I think Camp Thunderbird is important because it teaches you more about yourself and the Lakota ways for life. It’s also important so that you know more about your history and what the Indians did way back in the day way before you were born. Last year when I went to camp, I went swimming and tubing. I traveled to Custer, SD and I hiked a three mile trail. I made it all the way to the top and to this day, I’m so proud of myself. I visited the Lakota Ways Museum in Wall, SD. I also learned how to make clay sculptures and how to make fire using a bow drill. I learned so many things at Camp Thunderbird that I can’t explain, but I really enjoyed my time there and making new friends. Camp Thunderbird helped me by taking risks and trying new things. The camp also helped me by making new friends and keeping in touch with them to this very day.
My future involvement with Camp Thunderbird will hopefully be as a junior counselor. A junior counselor would be a great opportunity for me because I love to help others reach their goals and help them learn more about their family history. I would like to thank you for taking your time to read this letter and I’m really thankful that I got to experience something that I’ve never done before. Thank you once again and have a wonderful day!
